In Aryavarta, there is a city named Varanasi where Lord Shankar resides. Because of the presence of virtuous people, this city resembles the land of Kailash. Near this city flows the Ganges River with its deep waters, adorning the city like a necklace. In ancient times, there was a king ruling this city named Pratap Mukut.

Pratap Mukut had a son named Vajramukut who was as brave, valiant, and serious as his father. He was so handsome that he seemed like an incarnation of Kamadev. The king’s minister’s son, Buddhiśīr, was a close friend of Vajramukut. Once, Vajramukut went hunting in the forest with his friend. Amidst the dense forest, he came across a picturesque lake blooming with beautiful lotuses. At that moment, a princess arrived there with some of her maidens and began bathing in the lake. Vajramukut was enchanted by the princess’s beauty. The princess also noticed Vajramukut and was similarly attracted to him at first sight. Just as Vajramukut was thinking about learning more about the princess, she playfully gave him a clue about herself.

She took a lotus leaf and put it to her ear, scraped her teeth with a toothpick, placed another lotus on her forehead, and put her hand on her heart. However, Vajramukut did not understand the meaning of her gestures at that time.

Vajramukut, impatiently, asked, “How can someone whose name and lineage I do not know be found? Why do you falsely assure me otherwise?” To this, Buddhiśīr explained, “Friend, did you not see the signs she gave you? Listen—she placed a lotus on her ear indicating that she lives in the kingdom of King Karnottal. The scratching of her teeth was a hint that she is the daughter of a dentist there. By placing the lotus leaf in her ear, she indicated her name as Padmavati and placing her hand on her heart signified that her heart is given to you. There is a renowned king named Karnottal in Kalinga. In his court, there is a dentist’s daughter named Padmavati, whom he loves more than life itself. The dentist adores her dearly.”

Buddhiśīr continued, “I understood all these details from what I had heard from people, which helped me interpret the signs she gave about her country and other details.”

Upon reaching King Karnottal’s kingdom, he searched for the dentist’s house and found it. Vajramukut and Buddhiśīr then settled in a house near the dentist’s residence, which was occupied by an old woman.

However, one day, a messenger arrived with news of Vajramukut’s father’s demise. Vajramukut was grief-stricken, and Padmavati comforted him during this difficult time.
